Abstract:
The present invention relates to the characterization of odorant receptors. In particular, the present invention relates to the OR7D4 proteins and nucleic acids encoding OR7D4 proteins and cell systems for screening for modulators of OR7D4 receptors. The present invention further provides assays for the detection of OR7D4 polymorphisms and mutations associated with altered olfactory sensation states, as well as methods of screening for therapeutic agents, ligands, and modulators of OR7D4 receptors.

Abstract:
The present invention relates to a sensory device for reducing tension in a subject. The device includes an elastic covering, a filling material inside the elastic covering, an openable sealed reservoir located within the filling, an absorbent material surrounding the reservoir, and a calming odor releasing substance sealed within the reservoir. The present invention also relates to a method of reducing tension in a subject. This method involves providing a subject in need of tension relief with the device of the present invention. The device is manipulated to break open the reservoir and release the calming odor releasing substance. The released calming odor is inhaled in an amount sufficient to lower salivary cortisol levels in the subject and thereby reduce tension in the subject.

Compositions And Methods For A Universal Clinical Test For Olfactory Dysfunction
- New York NY, US Andreas KELLER - Astoria NY, US Leslie Birgit VOSSHALL - New York NY, US
International Classification:
A61B 5/00
Abstract:
Disclosed are compositions and methods for measuring olfactory sensitivity, olfactory resolution, and combinations thereof. Such measurements can be made during a single test, or over consecutive tests, which may be performed during a single testing period, such as in a single day, or over a series of testing periods. The tests may be performed by a health care professional, or may be conveniently self-administered by the user.

"The message here is that we have more sensitivity in our sense of smell than for which we give ourselves credit," said Andreas Keller, a research associate at Rockefeller's Laboratory of Neurogenetics and Behavior and the lead author on the Science study, in a statement. "It has often been said that humans can distinguish [only] 10,000 different smells," said study co-author Andreas Keller, a research associate with the laboratory of neurogenetics and behavior at Rockefeller University in New York City.
Vosshall and Andreas Keller, a senior scientist in her lab at Rockefeller University, devised a strategy to present their research subjects with complex mixtures of different odours, and then ask whether their subjects could tell them apart.

Human Nose Can Sniff Out Over 1 Trillion Smells: Odors from Fragrant to Acidic
Andreas Keller and his colleagues gave the research participants three jars, two of which contained the same smell, and their objective was to detect the lone scent. There were 128 different scents that the researchers mixed in groups of 10, 20, or 30, compiling 260 tests for the volunteers. To dete
Lead researcher Andreas Keller, also of Rockefeller University, said the number is almost certainly too low given that there are numerous other odorants that can mix in countless ways in the real world.

Humans can sniff more than a trillion different smells, research shows
"In general, I would say they had unfamiliar smells that were neither very pleasant nor very unpleasant. I thought 'fresh garbage' is a good descriptor," said Andreas Keller, a researcher in MsVosshall's lab who led the study.
"The evidence that such a genetic predisposition already existed in tzi's lifetime is of huge interest to us. It indicates that cardiovascular disease is by no means an illness chiefly associated with modern lifestyles," say says anthropologist Albert Zink and bioinformatics expert Andreas Keller.
