  • Abstract:
A rotary machine may have multiple stations that have a linear motion operated by a cam and a rotational motion operated by individual motors mounted on each station. Each station may perform a motion profile that is proportional to the machine's central axis rotation or, in some cases, independent of the central axis rotation. In some embodiments, each station may rotate to orient a part prior to processing. In one embodiment, the cam driven linear motion may enable a station to lower for loading and unloading, then raise for processing. The rotary machine may have various mechanisms at each station for processing a part. One such embodiment is a rotary machine that may be outfitted with compound dispensing mechanisms at each station.

  • Apparatus For Use In Trimming Can Bodies

    view source
  • US Patent:
    49696351, Nov 13, 1990
  • Filed:
    Apr 13, 1989
  • Appl. No.:
    7/337359
  • Inventors:
Bert E. Johansson - Golden CO
Ray L. Bowles - Golden CO
Leroy J. Haverland - Westminster CO
  • Assignee:
Adolph Coors Company - Golden CO
  • International Classification:
    B23Q 314
  • US Classification:
    269 481
  • Abstract:
A collapsible mandrel for use in holding a can body in a process wherein a portion of the can body having uneven edges on the open end thereof is trimmed away is provided and comprises a hollow support member having a longitudinal axis and mounted at a relatively fixed location and having a plurality of axially and radially outwardly extending resilient fingers integral therewith and an elongated hollow member mounted on the hollow support member to provide for linear movement therebetween. The elongated hollow member has a bearing surface in contact with the resilient fingers so that movement of the elongated hollow member varies the radially outwardly extent of the resilient fingers so that can bodies having inner peripheral surfaces of differing inner diameters may be readily moved over the resilient fingers but wherein the resilient fingers will exert a sufficient force thereon so that the can body will rotate with the resilient fingers. A movement limiting member is mounted within the resilient fingers so as to limit the radially inward movement of the resilient fingers. A locking device is provided to prevent the rotation of the elongated hollow member.

  • Inventors:
Conrad M. Grims - Golden CO
Bert E. Johansson - Golden CO
Roger A. Hahn - Arvada CO
  • Assignee:
Adolph Coors Company - Golden CO
  • International Classification:
    B21D 2221
  • US Classification:
    72347
  • Abstract:
A redraw apparatus is provided for a can body making apparatus wherein the redraw carriage of the redraw apparatus is mounted for substantially friction-free sliding reciprocating movement over a pair of spaced apart support posts which are fixedly mounted on the housing holding the can forming and ironing dies. Also, a counterbalancing system is provided for applying a force to counterbalance the weight of a portion of structures used to reciprocate the redraw carriage. Additionally, a raw assembly is provided for supporting a ram for movement through the redraw apparatus and the can forming and ironing dies wherein a pair of spaced apart elongated shafts are fixedly mounted and a ram carriage having the ram attached thereto is provided with liquid bearings using liquid coolant comprising water having solubles contained therein for mounting the ram carriage on the elongated shafts for substantially friction free movement thereover. A guide liquid bearing is also used to ensure proper alignment of the ram. Also disclosed in a reciprocating ram which is supported solely by a liquid bearing wherein the liquid bearing using liquid coolant comprising water having solubles contained therein has a sufficient length to ensure the proper alignment of the leading portion of the elongated ram as it engages a can blank in a redraw assembly and moves it through the forming and ironing dies to form an elongated can body.
