  • Abstract:
    Design for footwear in the form of a slide that is designed to be made up of several parts or components. All or a subset of these are manufactured by one or more manufacturers and provided to another party for assembly in a location that is “local” to a point of sale. The assembly of the separate or modular parts or components produces a slide that is suitable for sale to and for wear by the purchaser or end user. One or more of the parts or components provided to the assembling party is in the form of a blank that can be modified to provide local customization while other embodiments will have that customized part or component manufactured locally for later assembly. Further, the new design for slides includes one or more features that allow the end user or wearer to adjust the size and fit of each slide.

    A method of forming an article of footwear according to an embodiment of the present invention includes injection molding a footbed component as a single monolithic piece, the footbed component comprising a footbed having a top surface configured to contact a user's foot when the article of footwear is worn by the user, the footbed component further comprising a stitch-out flange extending laterally outwardly about the footbed, the stitch-out flange having a top surface and a bottom surface; arranging at least a portion of an upper as a layer against the top surface of the stitch-out flange; stitching the upper to the stitch-out flange by applying a stitching pattern completely through the upper and the top and bottom surfaces of the stitch-out flange, for example along a vertical direction with respect to the footbed component.

    A method of manufacturing an article of footwear includes providing an upper and an insole of the article of footwear, connecting the upper to the insole to provide a combined upper and insole having a foot-receiving chamber and a footbed-receiving opening, providing a unitary combined sole and footbed of the article of footwear, the unitary combined sole and footbed including at least a portion of a sole having an upper surface, a first portion of a footbed connected to the portion of the sole, and a second portion of the footbed connected to the first portion of the footbed, the second portion of the footbed having a lower surface detached from the upper surface of the portion of the sole, passing the second portion of the footbed through the footbed-receiving opening and into the foot-receiving chamber, and securing the insole to the portion of the sole.
