  • Method And System For Illuminating A Layer Of Electro-Optical Material With Pulses Of Light

    view source
  • US Patent:
    6377237, Apr 23, 2002
  • Filed:
    Jan 7, 2000
  • Appl. No.:
    09/479722
  • Inventors:
Douglas C. Sojourner - Fremont CA
  • Assignee:
Agilent Technologies, Inc. - Palo Alto CA
  • International Classification:
    G06F 1300
  • US Classification:
    345102, 345 97
  • Abstract:
A monitor pixel that includes a portion of the layer of electro-optical material is provided. A measured response time of the electro-optical material is measured using the monitor pixel. Illumination of the layer of the electro-optical material is then delayed by a time corresponding to the measured response time of the electro-optical material. The system for illuminating a layer of electro-optical material with pulses of light comprises a monitor pixel, a monitor pixel driver, an optical response detector and an illumination control circuit. The monitor pixel includes a portion of the layer of electro-optical material. The monitor pixel driver is configured to drive the monitor pixel with a monitor pixel drive signal. The optical response detector is coupled to the monitor pixel and is configured to generate a detection signal indicating a change in an optical property of the monitor pixel. The response time measurement circuit is configured to measure a measured response time of the electro-optical material in response to the monitor pixel drive signal and the detection signal.
  • Apparatus And Method For Color Illumination In Display Devices

    view source
  • US Patent:
    6473092, Oct 29, 2002
  • Filed:
    Apr 7, 2000
  • Appl. No.:
    09/545573
  • Inventors:
    Douglas Sojourner - Fremont CA
  • Assignee:
Agilent Technologies, Inc. - Palo Alto CA
  • International Classification:
    G09G 502
  • US Classification:
    345589, 345 88, 345 84, 345697
  • Abstract:
A color display device and a method is provided that renders images in a way optimized for perception by the human visual system, improving image color quality, and reducing device complexity are provided. The display device uses only two phases of illumination. This results in a reduction in sequential color artifact, cost and device complexity. A first illuminant source is optically coupled to a pixel and is adapted to provide a first color component on a first dual-color axis with a first duration. A second illuminant source is also optically coupled to the pixel and is adapted to provide a second color component on a second dual-color axis with a second duration. The first and the second color components are combined to illuminate the pixel with the first and second colors of the respective first and second durations whereby the pixel is perceived to be illuminated by a single color of a single intensity.
  • Gamma Correction For Displays

    view source
  • US Patent:
    6700561, Mar 2, 2004
  • Filed:
    Oct 31, 2000
  • Appl. No.:
    09/703418
  • Inventors:
    Douglas Sojourner - Fremont CA
Jeanne M Hermsen - Corvallis OR
Xuemei Zhang - Mountain View CA
Travis N Blalock - Charlottesville VA
  • Assignee:
Agilent Technologies, Inc. - Palo Alto CA
  • International Classification:
    G09G 336
  • US Classification:
    345 97, 345 89, 345 99, 345204
  • Abstract:
A system and method for using gamma correction in a ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) display uses a reduced number of different increment values for generating a Vramp signal for the FLC display without noticeably increasing error. The increment values are based upon an inverse gamma curve having a selected gamma value. Using linear interpolation, the increment values are calculated with more increment values being calculated for the beginning of the curve than the flatter end portion of the curve. In addition, an illumination period and a balance period are used so that each pixel of the FLC display is on and off for the same amount of time. As a result, the average voltage across the FLC material is 0V.
  • System And Method For Manufacturing Liquid Crystal Micro Displays

    view source
  • US Patent:
    6750939, Jun 15, 2004
  • Filed:
    Apr 25, 2001
  • Appl. No.:
    09/842100
  • Inventors:
Douglas Sojourner - Union City CA
Ken A. Nishimura - Fremont CA
Charles D. Hoke - Palo Alto CA
    Barry Bronson - Saratoga CA
  • Assignee:
Agilent Technologies, Inc. - Palo Alto CA
  • International Classification:
    G02F 11341
  • US Classification:
    349189, 349 73, 349 74, 349113, 349187, 438 15, 438 28
  • Abstract:
A liquid crystal micro display (lcmd) is manufactured by creating a hole in an lcmd surface, filling the lcmd with liquid crystal material through the hole, and then sealing the hole. The invention allows an lcmd to be tested before it is separated from other lcmds and packaged. As a result, the invention increases the yield and reduces the cost associated with lcmd manufacturing.
  • Liquid Crystal Apron And Skirt Isolation For Silicon Micro Displays

    view source
  • US Patent:
    63300990, Dec 11, 2001
  • Filed:
    Mar 24, 2000
  • Appl. No.:
    9/535372
  • Inventors:
    Douglas Sojourner - Fremont CA
    Craig Robson - Sunnyvale CA
Harold Dean Lewis - Ft. Collins CO
  • Assignee:
Agilent Technologies, Inc. - Palo Alto CA
  • International Classification:
    G02F 103
    G09G 336
  • US Classification:
    359254
  • Abstract:
An apron and a skirt of a spatial light modulator are each coupled to a substrate by reverse-bias diodes. The spatial light modulator includes liquid crystal material between an array of electrodes and a ground electrode. The apron surrounds the array, and the segmented skirt surrounds the apron. The array, apron, and skirt are formed over the substrate. The reverse-bias diodes provide suitable electrical isolation during normal operation, but dissipate excessive charge that might accumulate during plasma etching as the modulator is being manufactured and that might otherwise induce damage due to electrostatic discharge.
