  • Filed:
    Aug 29, 2005
  • Appl. No.:
    11/214240
  • Inventors:
Frank M. Heckendorn - Aiken SC, US
Kevin R. Hera - North Augusta SC, US
  • Assignee:
Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, LLC - Aiken SC
  • International Classification:
    B65G 53/60
  • US Classification:
    406152, 406151, 406153
  • Abstract:
A pneumatic nozzle capable of removing dry solid debris, liquids, and mixtures of solid and liquid waste is provided. The pneumatic nozzle uses a pressurized gas stream to push materials through the nozzle. The force of a pressurized gas stream provides a partial vacuum to allow material to be introduced into an opening of a nozzle via a slight suction force. Thereafter, individual particles and materials introduced into the pneumatic nozzle are pushed by a stream of pressurized gas through the nozzle.

  • US Classification:
    250253, 348 82
  • Abstract:
A hand-held portable video camera and radiation monitoring apparatus which can be deployed by a single operator in the field is disclosed. The apparatus uses a compact, extendable probe which provides real time visual monitoring via a video camera along with real time radiation detection and identification of isotopes. The apparatus includes software which identifies and reports to the operator via a speech synthesizer the identification of specific isotopes.
  • Radiation Relay Process And Apparatus

    view source
  • US Patent:
    20090170505, Jul 2, 2009
  • Filed:
    Nov 19, 2007
  • Appl. No.:
    11/986141
  • Inventors:
Lawrence J. Harpring - North Augusta SC, US
Frank M. Heckendorn - Aiken SC, US
  • Assignee:
Washington Savannah River Co LLC - Aiken SC
  • International Classification:

    G01J 3/00
  • US Classification:
    455427, 356300
  • Abstract:
A process and apparatus is provided for the transmission of radionuclide spectral information from a remote location. The process facilitates the use of a handheld radiation detector to detect a spectrum of radiation from a radiation source such as a cargo ship at sea. The process facilitates the downloading of information to a computer such as a PDA. The PDA is configured to allow communication with a satellite phone that transmits the stored spectrum to an evaluation center for further analysis and positive identification. Once identified, the results can be relayed to the remote location for appropriate action.
  • Apparatus For Observing A Hostile Environment

  • Assignee:
Westinghouse Savannah River Company - Aiken SC
  • International Classification:
    H04N 718
  • US Classification:
    348 82
  • Abstract:
An apparatus is provided for observing a hostile environment, comprising a housing and a camera capable of insertion within the housing. The housing is a double wall assembly with an inner and outer wall with an hermetically sealed chamber therebetween. A housing for an optical system used to observe a hostile environment is provided, comprising a transparent, double wall assembly. The double wall assembly has an inner wall and an outer wall with an hermetically sealed chamber therebetween. The double wall assembly has an opening and a void area in communication with the opening. The void area of the housing is adapted to accommodate the optical system within said void area. An apparatus for protecting an optical system used to observe a hostile environment is provided comprising a housing; a tube positioned within the housing; and a base for supporting the housing and the tube. The housing comprises a double wall assembly having an inner wall and an outerwall with an hermetically sealed chamber therebetween. The tube is adapted to house the optical system therein.
  • Constrained Space Camera Assembly

    view source
  • US Patent:
    59033061, May 11, 1999
  • Filed:
    Oct 20, 1997
  • Appl. No.:
    8/954255
  • Inventors:
Frank M. Heckendorn - Aiken SC
Erin K. Anderson - Augusta GA
Casandra W. Robinson - Trenton SC
Harriet B. Haynes - Aiken SC
  • Assignee:
Westinghouse Savannah River Company - Aiken SC
  • International Classification:
    H04N7/18
  • US Classification:
    348 85
  • Abstract:
A constrained space camera assembly which is intended to be lowered through a hole into a tank, a borehole or another cavity. The assembly includes a generally cylindrical chamber comprising a head and a body and a wiring-carrying conduit extending from the chamber. Means are included in the chamber for rotating the body about the head without breaking an airtight seal formed therebetween. The assembly may be pressurized and accompanied with a pressure sensing means for sensing if a breach has occurred in the assembly. In one embodiment, two cameras, separated from their respective lenses, are installed on a mounting apparatus disposed in the chamber. The mounting apparatus includes means allowing both longitudinal and lateral movement of the cameras. Moving the cameras longitudinally focuses the cameras, and moving the cameras laterally away from one another effectively converges the cameras so that close objects can be viewed. The assembly further includes means for moving lenses of different magnification forward of the cameras.
