    A conversion coating that does not substantially diminish the luster of a metal surface on which it is coated nor impair adhesion to the surface of lacquers and printing inks commonly used on beverage containers may be provided by contacting the metal surface with an aqueous liquid composition comprising water and at least the following components: (A) a component of one or more dissolved transition metal compounds that contain zirconium and may also include titanium, provided that zirconium constitutes more than 30% of the moles of the total moles or zirconium and titanium; (B) a component of at least one dissolved compound that contains inorganically bonded fluorine and is not part of component (A); and (C) a component of dissolved organic polymer molecules.

    The present invention discloses an improved cleaning composition for cleaning metal surfaces such as aluminum and aluminum-containing alloys. The cleaning composition of the present invention comprises water and an ethoxylate of an alcohol having Formula R—OH wherein Ris a saturated or unsaturated, straight-chain or branched aliphatic having from 12 to 80 carbon atoms; an inorganic pH adjusting component; and at least one surfactant that is different than the ethoxylate set forth above. The cleaning composition of the present invention also has an average water-break-free percent reduction of less than 50% after 7 days aging of a working composition prepared from the cleaning composition. The present invention also provides a method of cleaning a metal surface with the cleaning composition of the invention.

Materials according to general formula (I) may be used together with other surfactants, including some constituents of previously known lubricant and surface conditioner forming compositions to provide improvements in COF, waterbreak performance, water drainage and resistance to dry-off of the conditioner.
