  • Appl. No.:
    09/846007
  • Inventors:
George H. Forman - Port Orchard WA
Henri Jacques Suermondt - Sunnyvale CA
  • Assignee:
    Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P. - Houston TX
  • International Classification:
    H03M 1303
  • US Classification:
    714 46, 714 57, 705 26, 707 6
  • Abstract:
A real time, computerized, method, system, and method of doing business with respect to troubleshooting and resolving installed base product failures. A client establishes a link with the business server, filing a report describing the product and failure mode in plain text. The server compares the failure mode plain text to a historical data base, associating maintained keywords likely to appear in the report to product subunits associated with failure modes. Based on the comparison, the server calculates and transmits to the client predictions of resolving the failure. The client is provided with on-line capability for selecting and ordering replacements. The process is continuous, iterative, and interactive.

  • Filed:
    Aug 22, 2000
  • Appl. No.:
    09/644117
  • Inventors:
    Claus Skaanning - Dronninglund, DK
Henri Jacques Suermondt - Mountain View CA
Finn Verner Jensen - Brønderslev, DK
  • Assignee:
    Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P. - Houston TX
  • International Classification:
    G06F 1518
  • US Classification:
    706 52, 706 60
  • Abstract:
A probabilistic diagnostic system is validated. A diagnostic sequence is generated from a diagnostic model. The diagnostic sequence is evaluated to determine whether the diagnostic sequence provides an acceptable resolution to a problem. This is repeated for additional diagnostic sequences from the diagnostic model. It is determined whether a predetermined number of diagnostic sequences provide an acceptable resolution. When it is determined that the predetermined number of diagnostic sequences provide an acceptable resolution, the diagnostic model is accepted.

  • US Patent:
    6823323, Nov 23, 2004
  • Filed:
    Apr 26, 2001
  • Appl. No.:
    09/844202
  • Inventors:
George H. Forman - Port Orchard WA
Henri J. Suermondt - Sunnyvale CA
  • Assignee:
    Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P. - Houston TX
  • International Classification:
    G06E 100
  • US Classification:
    706 20, 706 14, 706 25
  • Abstract:
Methods and apparatus for classifying an instance (i. e. , a data item or a record) automatically into one or more classes selected from a set of potential classes are described. This multi-class classification approach enables instances to be classified with high accuracy, even when the number of classes is very large. In accordance with one classification scheme, a subset of two or more classes to which the instance is determined to most likely belong is selected from the set of potential classes. A classifier that is generated from a set of training records corresponding to a class set inclusive of the selected subset of classes is applied to the instance a to identify at least one class to which the instance most likely belongs.
  • Predicting The Health Of A Computer System By Determining A Set Of Modifications Involved In A Proposed Intervention To An Existing System

    view source
  • US Patent:
    6826683, Nov 30, 2004
  • Filed:
    Oct 23, 2000
  • Appl. No.:
    09/695184
  • Inventors:
Henri Jacques Suermondt - Mountain View CA
Evan R. Kirshenbaum - Mountain View CA
  • Assignee:
    Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P. - Houston TX
  • International Classification:
    G06F 124
  • US Classification:
    713100, 714 3, 714 7, 706 50
  • Abstract:
An arrangement for determining a predicted health of a system that would result from an application of a proposed intervention to an existing system. The predicted health is determined by determining a set of modifications involved in the proposed intervention wherein each modification involves one or more components of the existing system. For each modification, a set of component information that pertains to the modification is obtained from a knowledge base. Each set of component information may specify inter-dependencies among the components involved in the modification. For each modification, it is determined whether the inter-dependencies specified in the component information are satisfied. The determination of whether the inter-dependencies are satisfied enables a determination of the predicted health of individual components of the system as well as the predicted health of the overall system.

  • Filed:
    Apr 30, 2001
  • Appl. No.:
    09/846069
  • Inventors:
Henri Jacques Suermondt - Sunnyvale CA, US
George Henry Forman - Port Orchard WA, US
  • Assignee:
    Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P. - Houston TX
  • International Classification:
    G06F017/30
  • US Classification:
    707 7, 707 2, 707 3, 707 8, 707 10, 707100, 707200, 715 12, 715512
  • Abstract:
A method and system is provided for categorization of an item. A plurality of categories is organized in a hierarchy of categories with a plurality of categorizers corresponding to the plurality of categories. A featurizer featurizes the item to create a list of item features. The list is used in a categorizer system, including the plurality of categorizers, for determining a plurality of levels of goodness. The item is categorized in the categorizer system in the plurality of categories based on the respective plurality of levels of goodness. The best categories are processed first, allowing termination at any time. The system successively refines an item down a hierarchy, until the features no longer support further refinement. The categories and the degree of support for the categories are provided.

  • US Patent:
    6950812, Sep 27, 2005
  • Filed:
    Sep 17, 2001
  • Appl. No.:
    09/954755
  • Inventors:
Henri Jacques Suermondt - Sunnyvale CA, US
Tom Elliott Fawcett - Mountain View CA, US
  • Assignee:
    Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P. - Houston TX
  • International Classification:
    G06F017/00
    G06N005/02
  • US Classification:
    706 48, 706 45, 706 46
  • Abstract:
A method for determining accuracy of a classifier which provides an indication of the degree of correctness of the classifier rather than a mere correct/incorrect indication. The accuracy of the classifier is determined by determining a set of categories of an arrangement of categories selected for an item by the classifier and determining a set of categories of the arrangement selected for the item by an authoritative classifier. An accuracy measure which indicates a degree of correctness of the classifier is then determined based on the categories selected by the classifier and the categories selected by the authoritative classifier.

  • US Patent:
    6990485, Jan 24, 2006
  • Filed:
    Aug 2, 2002
  • Appl. No.:
    10/211840
  • Inventors:
George H. Forman - Port Orchard WA, US
Henri Jacques Suermondt - Sunnyvale CA, US
  • Assignee:
    Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P. - Houston TX
  • International Classification:
    G06F 17/30
  • US Classification:
    707 5
  • Abstract:
A method of inducing a top-down hierarchical categorizer includes providing a set of labeled training items. Each labeled training item includes an associated label representing a single category assignment for the training item. A set of unlabeled training items is provided. A prior is associated with the set of unlabeled training items that is independent of any particular feature contained in the unlabeled training items. The prior represents a plurality of possible category assignments for the set of unlabeled training items. A top-down hierarchical categorizer is induced with a machine learning algorithm based on the set of labeled training items, the set of unlabeled training items, and the prior.
