    H. Silvis - Midlandd MI, US
  • International Classification:
    B05D 5/00
  • US Classification:
    427243000
  • Abstract:
A method comprising forming a coating solution which comprises a matrix precursor material, a porogen material and a solvent, by selecting a polyarylene matrix precursor material which cross-links to form a matrix with a calculated cross-link moeity density of at least 0.003 moles/ml, and reacting the polyarylene matrix precursor material with a porogen which is linear oligomer or polymer which is formed from monomers comprising alkenyl or alkynyl functional monomers, which has reactive end groups and a weight average molecular weight in the range of less than about 5000, where the porogen is present in amounts in the range of about 10 to less than 50 percent by weight based on total weight of porogens and matrix precursor material.
  • Coated Plastic Substrate

  • US Patent:
    57189676, Feb 17, 1998
  • Filed:
    Oct 11, 1996
  • Appl. No.:
    8/729101
  • Inventors:
    Paul J. O'Connor - Midland MI
James C. Tou - Midland MI
James H. Sedon - Midland MI
Stephen E. Bales - Midland MI
Donald J. Perettie - Midland MI
  • Assignee:
The Dow Chemical Company - Midland MI
  • International Classification:
    B32B 702
    B32B 2736
  • US Classification:
    428216
  • Abstract:
The present invention is a laminate which comprises: a) a plastic substrate having a surface; b) an adhesion promoter layer which is a first plasma polymerized organosilicon compound deposited on the surface of the substrate in the substantial absence of oxygen; and c) a protective coating layer which is a second plasma polymerized organosilicon compound deposited on the surface of the adhesion layer at a power density from about 10. sup. 6 J/kg to about 10. sup. 8 J/kg, and in the presence of a sufficient stoichiometric excess of oxygen to form a silicon polymer of SiO. sub. 1. 8-2. 4 C. sub. 3-1. 0 and H. sub. 7-4. The coating layer provides abrasion and solvent resistance for the substrate, and the adhesion promoter prevents the coating layer from peeling off the substrate. The coated plastic substrate can be used in liquid crystal display devices as an alternative to glass.
  • Process For Making Glycol Ethers Utilizing A Heterogeneous Catalyst

    view source
  • US Patent:
    43606989, Nov 23, 1982
  • Filed:
    Jul 22, 1981
  • Appl. No.:
    6/286093
  • Inventors:
James H. Sedon - Midland MI
  • Assignee:
The Dow Chemical Company - Midland MI
  • International Classification:
    C07C 4103
  • US Classification:
    568618
  • Abstract:
A process to form glycol ethers by reacting an organic compound (A) having at least one aliphatic hydroxyl group with an oxirane compound (B) under reaction conditions in the presence of a catalytic amount of a polymeric material that is substantially insoluble in the reaction mixture, said polymeric material having a plurality of pendant sulfonate moieties with divalent metal counterions. Preferential formation of the mono adduct of glycol ethers is noted.
