    view source
  • US Patent:
    6438374, Aug 20, 2002
  • Filed:
    May 26, 1999
  • Appl. No.:
    09/320604
  • Inventors:
Kabekode Venkata Bhat - Naperville IL
  • Assignee:
Lucent Technologies Inc. - Murray Hill NJ
  • International Classification:
    H04Q 720
  • US Classification:
    455423, 455424, 455 8, 455 9, 455 671, 379113
  • Abstract:
A wireless communication service network includes a message processing system with at least two programmable application processors (APs) providing operational, administrative and maintenance support for one or more cell base stations in the network serving one or more wireless radio units. Improved control of the AP message processing resources is provided in response to an AP shutdown condition. In accordance with the improvement, an initial overload control (OLC) threshold is set for the APs, and the APs are monitored during their operation as they perform message processing. In the event that one of the APs becomes non-operational (non-operating AP), the OLC threshold relative to one or more remaining operational APs is dynamically increased. The message processing functions of the non-operational AP are then redistributed to one or more remaining operational APs, whereby improved load sharing is provided among the remaining operational APs and the likelihood of a catastrophic processing failure is minimized.
  • Apparatus And Method For Optimizing Cpu Usage In Processing Paging Messages Within A Cellular Communications System

    view source
  • US Patent:
    60979550, Aug 1, 2000
  • Filed:
    Sep 12, 1997
  • Appl. No.:
    8/928566
  • Inventors:
Kabekode V. Bhat - Naperville IL
  • Assignee:
Lucent Technologies, Inc. - Murray Hill NJ
  • International Classification:
    H04B 7216
  • US Classification:
    455445
  • Abstract:
An application processor within a distributed network of a cellular communications system minimizes CPU resource consumption for processing paging messages by determining whether a message received at the application processor is a paging message. In the case that such a message is a paging message, any other components such as radio cluster servers that are not essential for processing the paging message is bypassed within the application processor. A paging message is sent directly to a communication module that sends the paging message to the cells of the cellular communications system. In the case that such a message is not a paging message, the message is determined to be a regular call control message that is sent to components such as the radio cluster servers within the application processor that may have been bypassed for paging messages. CPU resources can be significantly conserved in processing paging messages within the cellular communications system.

  • International Classification:
    G06F 1338
    G06F 1517
  • US Classification:
    709226
  • Abstract:
A computer-implemented system performance model based resource management method and apparatus for dynamically guaranteeing delivery of specified constant bit rate multimedia data for a specified duration to each accepted multimedia client request, is disclosed. The method can be executed on any open system server or electronic device that selectively connects upstream multimedia information channels or storage subsystems over a data communication path to an arbitrary number of downstream NTSC ports or devices individually requiring data delivered at a specified bit rate for a specified duration. The method includes dynamically tracking the utilization and capacity of key resources of the server system as they are used by existing clients of the system, receiving and analyzing new requests for their impact if granted upon the performance of the server in servicing the existing clients, and granting the new request only if the analysis shows that such grant will guarantee that the server can simultaneously service the needs of both the new request and the existing clients. An open multimedia server system having an admission controller operating according to the described method is also disclosed.

  • Abstract:
A computer-implemented capacity planning system for multiprocessor computer systems used in client/server environments. The capacity planning system provides a correctly sized and configured computer system in response to user specified requirements. The user specified requirements comprise workload parameters. The generated output from the capacity planning generally comprises a recommended multiprocessor computer system, the number of processors needed in the system, the amount of memory required, and the configuration of a disk subsystem suitable for the system, including the number of disk drives, the size of each of the disk drives, and how they should be configured for best performance. The generated output from the capacity planning system further comprises a list price, discounted price, maintenance costs and price/performance indicator for the identified computer system configuration. The capacity planning system can also generate output describing probable system configurations and pricing from other vendors to provide a competitive analysis for the user.
  • Method And Apparatus For Improved Call Control Scheduling In A Distributed System With Dissimilar Call Processors

    view source
  • US Patent:
    60614420, May 9, 2000
  • Filed:
    Mar 7, 1997
  • Appl. No.:
    8/813532
  • Inventors:
Kabekode Venkata Bhat - Naperville IL
  • Assignee:
Lucent Technologies Inc. - Murray Hill NJ
  • International Classification:
    H04M 300
  • US Classification:
    379269
  • Abstract:
A call scheduling and assignment method and apparatus that schedules each call request on an application processor of a multiple processor system that will process the call request in the smallest amount of time. This method and apparatus then places response time as the important criterion over equal utilization of application processors in a multiple processor system. This method and apparatus recognizes that some application processors are able to respond faster than others, even when operating at the same or higher call load as other processors in the system. For such very common situations, the faster processors can and should be allowed to process a proportionally greater amount of the call processing load. By doing so, the calling customer receives a shorter wait and the system owner receives more call revenue for the same system equipment.

  • US Patent:
    57649618, Jun 9, 1998
  • Filed:
    Apr 3, 1996
  • Appl. No.:
    8/624337
  • Inventors:
Kabekode V. Bhat - Naperville IL
  • Assignee:
    NCR Corporation - Dayton OH
  • International Classification:
    G06F 9455
  • US Classification:
    395500
  • Abstract:
A computer-implemented performance modeling system incorporating data structures and algorithms representing a complex of ordered double buffering systems and buffer management schemes for delivery of diverse data in multimedia communication systems is disclosed. The modeling system enables the diverse data to be delivered from a disk subsystem connected to a diverse data enabled (DDE) server computer to client computers via the server computer and ATM networks in an efficient and predictable manner. A performance model for the ATM network based DDE server system is created that predicts the number of streams the entire system can dynamically support. The performance modeling system enables open system DDE servers, clients and switches to guarantee delivery of information to users dynamically, without buffer overflow or starvation.
  • Method And Apparatus For Dynamically Determining The Optimal Communication Message Bundle Size For A Communication System

    view source
  • US Patent:
    60759941, Jun 13, 2000
  • Filed:
    May 29, 1998
  • Appl. No.:
    9/087339
  • Inventors:
Kabekode V. Bhat - Naperville IL
  • Assignee:
Lucent Technologies, Inc. - Murray Hill NJ
  • International Classification:
    H04B 1100
  • US Classification:
    455458
  • Abstract:
A method and an apparatus for dynamically determining the optimal communication mess age bundle size for a communications system based on system resource utilization parameters, such as CPU utilization, message processing latencies, and paging message response delays within the system. At low loads, a bundle size of 1 message is selected. Under such conditions, paging messages are broadcast to mobile units in real time, with no waiting. As the mobile station termination activity increases and the round-trip-paging response delay exceeds a threshold, the bundle size is increased to reduce the processing overheads, which, in turn, reduces the end-to-end system delay for paging. As the paging message traffic decreases, the bundle size is reduced to decrease the delay introduced by bundling, which, in turn, reduces the round-trip-paging response delay.
