Abstract:
A demapping system and method for demapping symbols into bits, is provided. An embodiment of the system comprises a processor, and a memory that is coupled to the processor. The memory comprises a memory module that comprises a program that finds a hard demapper output d based on a received symbol r; finds a challenger cfor each i, the challenger cis a challenger of the hard demapper output d, i is an integer whose maximum value is a number of bits of the challenger c; calculates reliability mfor each i, the reliability mis the reliability of the hard demapper output d; and calculates soft bit xfor each i, the soft bit xis calculated based on the reliability m.

Abstract:
The present invention is generally directed to a system and method for encoding a DSL information bit stream and decoding a corresponding encoded DSL symbol. In accordance with one embodiment, an apparatus for encoding a DSL information bit stream is provided having a switch with an input configured to receive a DSL information bit stream and at least two outputs. An encoder is provided and coupled to a first output of the switch. A serial to parallel converter is provided and coupled to both an output of the encoder and a second output of the switch. Finally, a mapper is provided and coupled to an output of the serial to parallel converter through multiple paths. Preferably, a first coupling path between the serial to parallel converter and the mapper is a direct path and a second coupling path includes a second encoder.

Abstract:
In an asynchronous digital subscriber line (ADSL) system comprising a central office High Speed ADSL Terminating Unit (HSTU-C) in bi-directional discrete multitone (DMT) communication with a remote High Speed ADSL Terminating Unit (HSTU-R), a method for improving handshake detection is provided by the present invention. The method comprises transmitting handshake signaling from the HSTU-C to the HSTU-R via a first subset of carrier sets at a first symbol rate and transmitting handshake signaling from the HSTU-C to the HSTU-R via a second subset of carrier sets at a second symbol rate, the second symbol rate being less than the first symbol rate.

Abstract:
Various embodiments for addressing the performance objectives of LDSL and examples of smart systems for LDSL are disclosed. An evaluation of the spectral compatibility of two LDSL modes based on two different downstream masks, identified herein as LDSL Wide and Narrow, is disclosed. Spectral compatibility is evaluated in accordance with existing rules. Other embodiments may further comprise determining features of upstream transmission.

Abstract:
The present invention provides a method and apparatus for a new interleaver adaptation scheme that achieves “error free” and zero delay (interleaving—triangular) or near zero delay variation (interleaving—GCI), and with easier implementation but no additional memory required. The dummy insertion methods and systems embodiments of the invention provide an effective dummy byte insertion scheme for applications that require seamless on-line rate changes, e. g. , SRA (seamless rate adaptation), DRR (dynamic rate repartitioning) and adaptive INP (impulse noise protection).

Abstract:
There is provided a method of shaping PSD (Power Spectrum Density) of an FTTN (Fiber-To-The-Node) downstream signal from a disturber source to achieve spectral compatibility at an FTTN downstream victim with a downstream PSD from a reference source. The method includes receiving the downstream PSD from the reference source. The method further includes receiving an unshaped downstream PSD from the disturber source. The method further includes shaping the PSD of the FTTN downstream signal to have a substantially equivalent FEXT (Far-End Cross-Talk) into the FTTN downstream victim as the downstream PSD from the reference source.
