Abstract:
A system and method for monitoring the alertness of a subject are provided. A Doppler sensor is disposed to sense a parameter pertaining to the subject, the sensor being one of an acoustic sensor and a microwave sensor. Signals from the sensor are processed through an alertness monitoring algorithm for generating processed signals. It is thereafter determined whether an impairment of alertness event pertaining to the subject has occurred based on the processed signals. Feedback is then provided to the subject based on a determination of whether an impairment of alertness event pertaining to the subject has occurred.
An apparatus and method for measuring the weight of an occupant of a seat is described. The weight of the occupant can be determined by measuring the deflection of a portion of the seat. This may be accomplished through the use of a magnet and Hall-effect sensor, wherein deflection of a portion of the seat may cause a change in the distance between the magnet and the Hall-effect sensor. This change in distance may result in a change in intensity measured by the sensor, which can then be correlated to the weight of the occupant. Particular application may be made to measuring the weight of an occupant of an automobile, for purposes such as safety and ergonomics, and more readily to assist in the development of improved airbag deployment strategies.

Abstract:
The present invention relates to a cooling system, the cooling system having a nozzle which receives coolant from a reservoir and which faces a substrate. The nozzle may be opened and closed by a thermally responsive valve allowing the coolant to be automatically metered to the substrate, thus controlling the spatial distribution of the coolant that is applied to the substrate. This approach allows hotter areas of the substrate to receive more coolant, thus eliminating nonuniformities in the thermal profile of the substrate.

Abstract:
The present invention uses high thermal-conductivity materials to act as heat pipes around or through a soft body armor vest to transfer heat away from the body of the wearer. A moisture wicking layer is also incorporated and used to pull moisture from the body of the wearer and disperse the moisture to the outer surface where it can evaporate. An evaporative cooling effect, which is a one-way phase change process that is similar to that of the human body, removes thermal energy from the high thermal-conductivity materials at the outside surface of the vest dissipating the heat into the environment.

A system provided herein may be configured to evaluate helmet performance. The system may include an impact assembly that includes a stationary post operably coupled to one or more stationary load cells and a plurality of modular headforms. Each modular headform may include a first side and a second side configured to lock together around the impact assembly and receive a helmet. The modular headform may determine a position of the helmet relative to the one or more stationary load cells. Furthermore, the one or more stationary load cells may be configured to measure impact force at a position where one of the plurality of the modular headforms are operably coupled to the impact assembly. Additionally, each of the plurality of modular headforms correspond to a position in relation to the impact assembly to measure the impact force to the one or more load cells at a predefined number of impact locations on the helmet to evaluate the performance of the helmet.
