Abstract:

A universal tool for installing annular parts, components, or devices such as tapered and non-tapered bearings on shafts includes a cap, a tube, and cooperating interchangeable force distributors. A first interchangeable tapered force distributor attaches to the tube and includes a tapered or beveled edge allowing for proper visual alignment with, and isolated force distribution on, the inner race of a tapered bearing. A second interchangeable non-tapered force distributor also attaches to the tube and includes an annular flange with a substantially flat surface that cooperates with the inner and outer races of the ball bearing such that force applied to the cap of the universal tool is evenly distributed around the inner and outer races of the ball bearing. A connector piece can be used to connect two tubes in order to accommodate longer shafts. For a press-through design, a modified cap comprising an external non-tapered force distributor can be substituted when a machine press is used to install the bearing on the shaft.

Abstract:

A hollow-end fastener starting tool and method to more efficiently seat a fastener in a desired location or aperture. The inside diameter of the hollow-end is slightly larger than the outside diameter of the fastener. To securely hold the fastener in the tool, a small dab of a tacky substance is put on the end of the fastener and the tacky end is inserted into the hollow end of the tool. The tacky substance holds the fastener in place inside the tool. The fastener is then inserted into the aperture or at some other desired location. Once started, the friction holding the fastener in place is greater than the friction holding the tacky end in the tool. The starting tool can be pulled away from the fastener, leaving the fastener in place for seating.

Abstract:

A sun gear/planetary housing apparatus for use in a vehicle transfer case assembly is provided. The apparatus includes a planetary housing assembly having a body, a gear cavity formed within the body, a gear supporting ridge located within the gear cavity, a plurality of notches located on the gear supporting ridge, and a washer accepting groove located on the gear supporting ridge; a washer having a plurality of oil carrying channels and a plurality of tabs configured to engage with the notches; and a sun gear assembly having a gear end and a bearing surface located on the gear end. A method of assembling a sun gear/planetary housing apparatus is also provided.
