Provided are systems, methods, and machine-readable storage media for presenting animations overlying multimedia files in accordance with the present disclosure. Embodiments are described for linking an animation to a multimedia file and presenting the animation overlying a concurrent playback of the multimedia file (e.g., its content). Embodiments are described for including additional elements to the presentation of the animation outside of the playback of the animation, including residual elements that relate to the content of the animation and/or allow a user to receive further information about the content of the animation.
