A free piston engine utilizes a shuttle frame external to combustion chambers to rigidly link shuttle parts reciprocating along a centerline. If the shuttle parts are spaced apart along the centerline, the shuttle frame may be struts extending from the shuttle parts and linked by rods. Alternatively the shuttle parts are within a tubular shuttle frame that forms part of the combustion chamber boundary. If one shuttle part is arranged around the other with both centered about the centerline, the shuttle frame may include an annular plate between a cylindrical inner shuttle part and an annular outer shuttle part. Alternatively the shuttle frame may include an inner tube with a cylindrical inner shuttle part within the inner tube, and an outer tube with an annular outer shuttle part arranged between the inner and the outer tubes so that the shuttle frame forms part of the combustion chamber boundary.
A method is provided for determining the sequence of nucleotides on a single strand DNA molecule. The single strand DNA molecule is attached to a leader oligonucleotide and its complementary strand to a solid state support. Fluorescently-labeled 3'-blocked nucleotide triphosphates, with each of the bases A, G, C, T having a different fluorescent label, are mixed with the bound DNA molecule in the presence of DNA polymerase. The DNA polymerase causes selective addition of only the complementary labeled NTP, thus identifying the next unpaired base in the unknown DNA strand. The 3'-blocking group is then removed, setting the system up for the next NTP addition and so on. The sequence is repeated until no more fluorescently-labeled NTPs can be detected as being added by the polymerase.

An engine with mesh anchored combustion with a pressure regulating auxiliary chamber for providing controlled internal combustion at essentially a constant pressure. The engine comprises a main cylinder and piston with an auxiliary chamber and piston integral therewith. The auxiliary chamber is adjacent to the main cylinder head, connected thereto through a relatively narrow throat. A mesh is positioned in the throat at the boundary of the main cylinder and the auxiliary chamber. Accordingly, when the main piston compresses a charge in the main cylinder during its compression stroke, the charge is pushed through the mesh into the auxiliary chamber. The auxiliary chamber piston pushes the charge in the reverse direction back through the mesh into the main cylinder. As the charge passes through the mesh back into the main chamber, its combustion forces the main piston back down toward bottom dead center.
