A filter assembly for removing particulate contaminants and chemical contaminants from an incoming dirty air stream for a fuel cell. The filter assembly also includes a noise suppression element that reduces noise emanating from any equipment, such as a compressor. The filter assembly can include a particulate filter portion for removing physical or particulate contaminants, a chemical filter portion for removing chemical contaminants, or can have both portions.

Abstract:
An early warning system for equipment or processes which can be permanently or temporarily damaged by contaminants coming from air moving equipment, such as a compressor, positioned upstream of air flowing through the equipment. The present invention provides a seal-leak detection arrangement that, when incorporated into air moving equipment, monitors the air passing through the air moving equipment for the presence of contaminants such as lubricant oil, which could damage the equipment downstream. At least one sensor is positioned downstream of a contaminant retaining seal within the air moving equipment. The seal-leak detection arrangement is particular useful when incorporated into systems upstream of a fuel cell.

Abstract:
A system for particulate removal from fluid streams by using acoustic cavity technology. The technology can be applied to various applications, such as Diesel engine post-combustion emissions control systems, mist filtration systems, particle recovery systems, liquid degassing systems, and closed crankcase ventilation systems. An acoustic cavity can be used to replace an inertial separator, cyclone, or similar particulate removal equipment, providing a considerably lower pressure loss across the cavity compared to an inertial separator or cyclone, because an acoustic cavity does not appreciable alter the fluid flow path.
A contamination control system for cathode intake air for fuel cell systems, particularly PEM fuel cell systems. The contamination control system incorporates three portions, particulate control, chemical contaminant control, and sound suppression or attenuation of the noise emitted by air handling equipment such as compressors, blowers, fans and expanders. At least one of these portions is designed and installed in the fuel cell system with the intent of lasting the life of the system. In a preferred system, a z-filter configured for straight-through flow is permanently installed in an automobile.
