Abstract:
There is disclosed herein an apparatus for electromagnetic forming, joining or welding a workpiece, the apparatus including at least two multi-turn solenoid coils wound in a manner that cooperatively encircles the workpiece to be formed. The apparatus also includes an electrically insulative shell encasing each coil and an electromagnetic current source electrically connected to the coils that generates an electromagnetic field. A hinge mechanism connects the insulative shells and a locking mechanism secures the shells and coils around the workpiece during electromagnetic field generation. A conductive rod joins the solenoid coils and permits series current flow between the coils. The apparatus further includes a shaper that encircles the workpiece and which restricts movement of the workpiece during electromagnetic forming. The shaper concentrates the generated electromagnetic field on the workpiece.

Abstract:
A method and tool for forming a hem flange. A larger radius bend is initially formed when a pre-hem flange is formed. A sharper radius bend is subsequently formed when the flange is formed. After the flange is formed, conventional hem forming methods and tools may be used to complete formation of a hem that may be used to join inner and outer panels.

Abstract:
An apparatus for trimming scrap from an aluminum sheet metal blank is provided. The apparatus includes a clamping base comprising a clamping base engagement surface positioned between a clamping base upper surface and a clamping base bottom surface. The clamping base engagement has a clamping base vertically orientated portion and a clamping base angled portion. A steady blade is mounted to the clamping base. The steady blade and the clamping base form a contiguous angled engagement surface. The steady blade engagement surface forms a steady blade trimming edge. An elastic scrap support and an upper clamping element are included. A moving blade includes a moving blade trimming edge formed by the intersection of the moving blade blade-side surface and the moving blade engagement surface. The moving blade engagement surface distributing strain on the aluminum blank as the moving blade trimming edge separates the scrap element from the aluminum blank.
Apparatus For Electromagnetically Forming A Workpiece
An apparatus for electromagnetically forming a workpiece. The apparatus includes a solenoid coil for generating an electromagnetic force and a tool for concentrating electromagnetic force against the workpiece. The tool includes an electrically conductive body having an aperture and an insulator disposed in the aperture.

Abstract:
An electro-hydraulic forming tool is disclosed in which a membrane is retained between two volumes of liquid that are separated by a membrane. Electrodes are provided with a high voltage impulse to create a shockwave in one of the volumes of fluid that is transferred through the membrane to the other volume of fluid. The shockwave is transmitted to a blank that is formed into a one-sided die. The blank is formed against the forming surface of the die. Air evacuation means are provided to remove air from the upper surface of one or both volumes of liquid.

Abstract:
An electrohydraulic forming (EHF) tool having a pair of electrodes that can be used to generate a shockwave to facilitate forming a sheet metal blank against a forming die. The electrodes may be adjusted during the course of operation. This may be useful should continued use cause their efficiency to drop below a desired threshold.

Abstract:
A method is provided for forming a sheet metal blank or tubular blank in a metal forming tool, such as a sheet metal press or a media forming tool. The sheet metal press has an upper die and a lower die that are moved by a press to form the metal blank. The forming tool has a plurality of electrodes that are connected in an electrical circuit to a source of direct current. The electrodes provide pulses of the electric current to at least a portion of the blank. The method comprises loading the blank into the forming tool and closing the upper die and the lower die. The electrical circuit is completed between multiple electrodes through one or more portions of the blank. Electrical current is pulsed intermittently through the blank in a plurality of pulses.
