  • Multitasking Data Processing System And Method Of Controlling Allocation Of A Shared Resource

    view source
  • US Patent:
    6601083, Jul 29, 2003
  • Filed:
    Aug 29, 1996
  • Appl. No.:
    08/705449
  • Inventors:
Frederick John Reznak - Cary NC 27511-5057
  • International Classification:
    G06F 900
  • US Classification:
    709104, 709102, 710240
  • Abstract:
A multitasking data processing system having a plurality of tasks and a shared resource and a method of controlling allocation of shared resources within a multitasking data processing system are disclosed. In response to a resource request for a portion of a shared resource by a particular task among the plurality of tasks, a determination is made whether or not granting the resource request would cause a selected level of resource allocation to be exceeded. In response to a determination that granting the resource request would not cause the selected level of resource allocation to be exceeded, the resource request is granted. However, in response to a determination that granting the resource request would cause the selected level of resource allocation to be exceeded, execution of the particular task is suspended for a selected penalty time. In one embodiment of the present invention, the shared resource is a memory.
  • Matching Of Wild Card Patterns To Wild Card Strings Associated With Named Computer Objects

    view source
  • US Patent:
    59266520, Jul 20, 1999
  • Filed:
    Dec 20, 1996
  • Appl. No.:
    8/770969
  • Inventors:
Frederick J. Reznak - Cary NC
  • Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
  • International Classification:
    G06F 704
    G06F 1730
  • US Classification:
    395898
  • Abstract:
method of matching computer wild card patterns involves comparing first and second character strings associated with named objects residing on a computer system to determine whether the first character string defines a first group of computer objects which is a logical subset of a second group of computer objects defined by the second character string. The first character string is provided by a user; such as in a command line, and the second character string is pre-defined, such as by a network administrator. The method can be performed by examining whether the second character string has any wild card character which can substitute for one and only one character, or by examining whether the second character string has any wild card character which can substitute for any number of characters, including no characters (a universal character). The second character string can further be examined to see if it contains any embedded sequence of characters having no universal wild card character.
  • Data Processing System And Method Of Task Management Within A Self-Managing Application

    view source
  • US Patent:
    62232010, Apr 24, 2001
  • Filed:
    Aug 27, 1996
  • Appl. No.:
    8/708135
  • Inventors:
Frederick John Reznak - Cary NC
  • Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
  • International Classification:
    G06F 900
  • US Classification:
    709102
  • Abstract:
A data processing system and method of task management within a self-managing application program including a number of tasks and a processing time monitor are disclosed. In accordance with the present invention, a selected portion of processing time is allocated to each of the tasks in the self-managing application and the tasks are executed by the data processing system. Utilizing the processing time monitor, a determination is periodically made whether an actual portion of processing time utilized by each of the tasks exceeds the selected portion of processing time allocated to that task. In response to a determination that an actual portion of processing time utilized by a particular task exceeds the selected portion of processing time allocated that task, execution of the particular task is suspended for a selected penalty time. In one embodiment, the penalty time is selected such that following the expiration of the penalty time, the actual portion of processing time utilized by the particular task will be no greater than the selected portion of processing time allocated to the particular task.
  • Correlating A Response With A Previously Sent Request In A Multitasking Computer System Using Pipeline Commands

    view source
  • US Patent:
    54487307, Sep 5, 1995
  • Filed:
    Dec 14, 1993
  • Appl. No.:
    8/166754
  • Inventors:
Thomas R. Bakita - Raleigh NC
Steven M. Crimmins - Durham NC
Thomas L. Howe - Oxford NC
Frederick J. Reznak - Cary NC
  • Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
  • International Classification:
    G06F 938
  • US Classification:
    395650
  • Abstract:
Method and apparatus for tagging a service request and the responses to a service request in a pipeline program running on a task in a multitasking computer system. Each service request made to a service supplier from a pipeline stage is tagged with a unique identifier string that is automatically returned to the pipeline with the response to the service request. A time manager stage monitors the unique identifiers appended to responses directed into the pipeline and uses the identifiers to correlate each response to a specific, previously sent request. The time manager then directs the responses to the appropriate destination stage. The time manager also discards responses that are no longer needed either because the appropriate destination stage or pipeline is no longer active, or because a user specified time-out interval has elapsed.
